Letters from Iraq
Greetings from Fort Benning,
I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the faith communities of the greater Columbus area. I'm Colonel Johnnie Johnson, the new Brigade Commander of 3rd Brigade Heavy Combat Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division located on Kelley Hill. It has been a truly humbling and exciting time for my family and I after joining a truly amazing unit and magnificent community! With my introduction I wanted to express to you that I am a man of faith who believes in the power of communal and individual prayer.
Colonel Pete Jones, the former Brigade Commander, and I had a terrific transition where he mentioned the tremendous spiritual support and assistance provided by Columbus faith communities to Sledgehammer Soldiers and their families during our most recent deployment in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM and now OPERATION NEW DAWN. I extend my sincerest thanks and gratitude for your dedicated service to God and our Country and ask that you continue your prayers and support for our Brigade and our Army as we prepare for future missions while sustaining current operations around the globe.
As we celebrate Ash Wednesday, the Lenten Season, Passover, and Easter Events in the coming months, I am reminded of the spiritual significance of these hallowed events and the opportunities they provide our Soldiers and families to worship and strengthen their faith. I will continue to encourage participation in faith based activities and spiritual fitness within the command which I believe is a vital pillar to the overall health of our Soldiers and families. Religious and counseling activities on Kelley Hill occur daily. We currently conduct general faith counsel, Worship on Wednesday (WOW) from 1200-1300, and Bible study on Thursdays evenings at the Kelley Hill Chapel. As always, you are invited to join us.
Thanks again. We truly value our partnership and your support.
Sincerely,
Johnnie L. Johnson, Jr.
Colonel, Armor
Commander, 3rd HBCT, 3rd ID
